Short description
30% of global fish stocks are overfished, and 60% are fully exploited: an alarming signal for the largest ecosystem on our planet. In addition, fish products are often contaminated with microplastics, heavy metals, and antibiotics – harmful to humans, animals, and the environment. As a result, more and more consumers are looking for healthy, sustainable alternatives: In the EU, around one in ten people already live a vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian lifestyle – and the trend is rapidly growing.
Plant-based proteins offer a resource-efficient, pollutant-free alternative. But they only gain broad acceptance if they convince in terms of taste and texture. Conventional technologies reach their limits here – especially when it comes to replicating complex structures.
This is where Revo Foods comes in: Over the past five years, we have developed a new 3D printing technology that, for the first time, makes it possible to combine plant-based fats and proteins in a way that creates authentic taste experiences and fibrous textures similar to real fish. Since production began in September 2024, we have been manufacturing plant-based fish fillet alternatives at our Vienna-based "THE TASTE FACTORY" using six patented 3D printing machines: currently producing > 25,000 products per month.
All our products are made from fermented mushroom protein ("mycoprotein"), one of the most sustainable protein sources in the world. A real superfood with a complete amino acid profile and high bioavailability (higher than beef!).
Our products like "THE FILET – Inspired by Salmon" and "EL BLANCO – Inspired by Black Cod" are already available at over 1,000 points of sale across Europe, including REWE, EDEKA, BILLA, and SPAR.
With PRIME CUT, we’re taking a bold step forward: moving away from alternatives toward an independent product that convinces with great taste and nutritional value – without comparing it to animal-based products. Internally, we call it "Tofu 2.0", an ideal plant-based protein source for fitness- and performance-oriented consumers.
Now is the right time to scale our proven technology and meet the growing demand. With lower production costs, increased efficiency, and new products, we plan to be profitable by 2026.
Join our mission to contribute to a better world through healthy and sustainable food!

Product and customer benefits
We produce plant-based fish and meat alternatives using our self-developed industrial 3D food printing process. So far, we have successfully launched several products:
1. THE FILET – Inspired by Salmon
Our salmon fillet "THE FILET" became the first 3D-printed food available in supermarkets in 2023. It is based on fermented mushroom protein, also known as Mycoprotein. Mycoprotein has the advantage of being processed at low temperature and with little pressure, which results in less process effort and more nutrients being retained. To achieve a high omega-3 content, plant oils and algae extracts are added. Compared to conventional salmon, the product contains no antibiotics, microplastics, or heavy metals and offers sufficient micronutrients through the addition of various vitamins. Thanks to the 3D printing process, the product has a significantly better texture than previous fish alternatives (such as firmness, appearance, or fat content in the product even after heating) – a major advantage of our new technology.
2. Marinated Versions of THE FILET
After the success of THE FILET, we noticed that many people prefer lighter, culinary variants. Therefore, since February 2025, we have launched several marinated versions of THE FILET, such as ASIAN FUSION STYLE, PINK PEPPER & LEMON STYLE, or BBQ STYLE. These variations make our product portfolio more versatile for different consumer groups.
3. EL BLANCO – Inspired by Black Cod
In March 2025, we launched the first vegan alternative to white fish fillets, which resembles char or cod in flavor. The very fine structure is visually appealing, and the juicy taste has been very well received by consumers. This product was also able to convince BILLA and SPAR to list it, and it is gaining increasing popularity.
4. THE PRIME CUT
With the PRIME CUT, we are taking a bold step in a new direction: moving away from being an alternative to becoming an independent product that excels with great nutritional values and taste, requiring no comparison to animal products. We internally call this product "Tofu 2.0" because it represents a great plant-based protein source for fitness/performance-oriented consumers, and thus can reach a new customer segment.
Innovation and technology
“3D extrusion allows us to completely rethink food production and place the individual needs of people at the heart of the technology.” Robin Simsa, CEO of Revo Foods GmbH
Revo Foods develops new technologies for additive food manufacturing (3D food printing). The following points are particularly relevant:
1. Integration of two different material phases: Our technology combines plant-based protein fibers with fats (essential for consistency) – a capability no other technology offers.
2. Scalability through a continuous process: We have developed a new 3D extrusion printhead design (2 patents) that allows the continuous extrusion of a viscous material flow (e.g., plant-based proteins) and is protected by two patents. Another patent covers our multi-nozzle systems (1 patent), enabling the simultaneous production of large quantities of material. These technological developments are essential for the cost-effective and high-volume production of food products.
3. Software control: Our proprietary slicing software enables fast and flexible production of 3D food products. We are the first company in the world to implement a software environment specifically for the application of 3D food printing. Our software is a crucial technological aspect of Revo Foods and will also be relevant for licensing to other companies in the future.
4. Mycoprotein: Revo Foods has also brought a new innovation in material development. The main ingredient in our products is fermented mushroom protein (“mycoprotein”), which has a high fiber content that is created through the 3D printing process. Mycoprotein has a complete amino acid profile and high bioavailability, making it very nutritious and responsible for the “A” Nutri-Score in our salmon fillet.
5. 3D extrusion technology: Our new 3D extrusion technology enables flexible industrial production of high-quality products with complex shapes and structures. For the first time, a seamless integration of vegan fat into plant-based protein fibers is possible. This enables a new generation of food products such as authentic fish and meat alternatives and can be applied in many other areas of the entire food industry. We want to take this a step further: moving away from alternatives, towards independent protein products with high nutritional value and great taste that stand on their own against animal products. THE PRIME CUT is an example of these innovative developments.
6. Production capacity: Thanks to the continuous production process in combination with our multi-nozzle system (patent pending), it is now possible to industrialize 3D food printing and bring it to the mass market. Since September 2024, we have been the first company worldwide to show that this technology is suitable for producing many tons per month at our production facility, “THE TASTE FACTORY.” Our production capacity continues to grow with new technological developments.
Market and target group
From “Alternative” to Premium Protein Products
The market for high-protein products is continuously growing. This is exactly where we come in: With our high-quality, sustainable, and healthy protein ingredient, mycoprotein, we move away from being a mere alternative and towards independent products that create a new category of performance food for a new customer base—health-conscious and performance-driven consumers who also value sustainability.
Our plant-based protein products are ideally positioned to appeal to this target group due to their high-quality ingredients (mycoprotein) and our unique texturizing process (3D printing technology).
Revo Foods products offer high nutritional value and convince with authentic taste and texture. While more and more people are interested in meat and fish alternatives, repurchase rates remain low due to insufficient product quality. Our new technology delivers added value, helping us convince traditional meat and fish consumers to embrace plant-based products.
New products like THE PRIME CUT can also appeal to a performance- and fitness-oriented audience that isn’t necessarily seeking a substitute for meat or fish but rather a delicious, nutritious protein product in its own right.
In the future, we will also license our technology to other food companies for further innovative product applications.
Competition and unique selling points
Revo Foods has successfully brought the 3D extrusion process using sustainable ingredients like mycoprotein into serial production, enabling continuous large-scale manufacturing. This marks a major breakthrough, as 3D printing was previously considered “non-scalable” and other companies have not progressed beyond small-batch production.
Thanks to our proprietary and patented technology, we have already demonstrated our readiness for mass markets and are the only company worldwide producing several tons per month, distributing them to leading European supermarkets such as EDEKA, REWE, Billa, and ICA.
In contrast to competitors in the plant-based fish and meat industry, we have developed our own technology that allows us to create unique products with differentiated texture, quality, and taste. This enables Revo Foods to stand out from the market in the mid to long term and expand its market leadership from its home market in Austria to other international markets. Our patented technology can also be licensed to other food companies in the future via B2B models, with initial discussions already underway.
Business model and distribution
Our business model is based on the production and sale of plant-based products to the food retail sector and gastronomy. We currently operate with two main sales channels.
The first sales channel is the direct sale of products to supermarkets, wholesalers, and food service businesses. Products are transported chilled or frozen from our warehouse directly to customers. In addition, we also offer our products directly to end consumers via our online shop.
The second sales channel involves distribution partners within the EU who receive Revo Foods products and handle interim storage until delivery to supermarkets, wholesalers, or food service outlets. These partners support us in getting our products listed in supermarkets and wholesale markets, helping to expand our distribution network.
We have already reached many important sales milestones, and our products are available at EDEKA, REWE, BILLA, SPAR, ICA (Sweden), CONTINENTE (Portugal), Kaufland (Slovakia), and through a wide range of gastronomy and distribution partners across Europe.
Once industrial scaling of our 3D food printing is achieved, our technology will be of great interest to major food corporations, as it enables mass production of complex shapes and structures. To address this market, we plan to expand our sales strategy to include the licensing of our 3D production process. This is scheduled for early 2026. We are currently investing heavily in building this business segment and are already in talks with potential large-scale partners.

FAQ
Q: Are these products actually healthy?
A: Absolutely. THE FILET has a Nutri-Score of “A” and is rich in Omega-3 and protein. All of our products use mycoprotein as a high-quality ingredient, which, as fermented mushroom protein, is not only sustainable but also offers a complete amino acid profile and higher bioavailability than beef.
Q: What exactly is mycoprotein?
A: Mycoprotein is a mushroom-based protein obtained through a fermentation process. The fungal culture is grown in a nutrient medium (imagine it like the nutrients in forest soil). It doubles its mass in just 5 hours, making it one of the most sustainable protein sources in the world!
Q: What other products can be made with this technology?
A: Initially, we focused on salmon, as it is one of the most consumed fish worldwide. We have since developed a first whitefish alternative with EL BLANCO and are now taking a new approach with PRIME CUT — moving away from alternatives and toward a protein-rich original that appeals to fitness-oriented customers.
Q: Is the technology also suitable for other food processes?
A: Yes, we can process a wide variety of viscous base materials in our system — for example, doughs, baked goods, or purées. We have already received inquiries from major food producers in this segment, which is why, after successful scaling, licensing our technology for other applications is possible to further increase revenue.
Q: How do you measure your impact?
A: Together with a master's student, we evaluated the impact of our early-stage production. The result: around 75% less CO2 emissions and up to 60% less energy consumption compared to conventional fish. Additionally, we track how many fish we’ve already “saved,” assuming our products were purchased instead of conventional fish. As of November 2023, that's over 20,000 fish.
Q: How do you reach your customers?
A: We rely on a wide range of marketing activities, and our social media channels are among the most followed pages of companies offering plant-based fish alternatives. You can get an impression on Instagram or our YouTube channel.
Q: Isn’t 3D printing only suitable for prototypes and too slow for food production?
A: One of the key innovations in our work is establishing a continuous industrial process in 3D food printing. Our systems are more comparable to dosing systems long used in the food industry (such as for chocolate production), but with more complex extrusion mechanisms and 3D kinematics during the process. By using multi-nozzle systems and linking several extruders, we achieve production volumes at the same cost as conventional extrusion systems — but with the ability to produce more complex shapes and textures. In our production facility “THE TASTE FACTORY,” we already manufacture several tons of products per month, and our output continues to grow!
Q: How does Revo differ from the competition?
A: Our unique production technology allows us to create plant-based alternatives that stand out from competitors in taste and texture. We’ve protected this technology with 3 patents.
Q: What are the nutritional values of the products?
A: The filet contains 9.5% protein and is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, while containing very little sugar or salt. That’s why we’re allowed to market the product with a Nutri-Score of “A”.
About Revo Foods
Many companies produce plant-based protein products, but Revo Foods is one of the few that relies on a proprietary, patented technology. Our unique selling point: no one else can produce products of this quality.
The idea for plant-based protein products originated from a research project by Robin during his PhD studies. The issues of overfishing and the exploitation of one of our largest ecosystems—the world’s oceans—motivated him to dedicate himself entirely to the production of plant-based fish alternatives after completing his doctorate in 2020. Since conventional extrusion technologies were not suitable for creating these innovative products, the idea was born to develop a proprietary process technology—3D food printing.
The company was officially founded in 2021 and launched its first pilot products in the same year. Since then, the 3D printing technology has been continuously refined, and in 2023, the world’s first 3D-printed product was introduced in a supermarket. In September 2024, Revo Foods opened the world’s first production facility using this new technology in Vienna ("THE TASTE FACTORY"), where the company's proprietary machines are now producing over 25,000 products per month. Revo Foods offers plant-based salmon alternatives (THE FILET) and cod alternatives (EL BLANCO), and has secured strong retail partners such as EDEKA, REWE, BILLA, and SPAR. More products are about to be launched.
